Jewel Coffee – A Review of Their Coffee

Situated right next to the School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore (NUS). Jewel Coffee is a chain of speciality coffee with outlets all over Singapore. I have visited this particular outlet a few times over the past few years. This cafe is one of the reasons I am willing to wake up before eight in the morning to taxi the mother to work. The sound of barista’s at work, the quiet conversations in the background and the very comfortable couches make this cafe excellent for engaging in work. This was on 20th July 2020!

Fun fact; there are always two different coffee beans to choose from. These are changed every two to three days depending on the date of the roast. A coffee you order today might taste completely different if you come by a week later and choose a different set of beans.

Ambience –
Plenty of personal space to avoid intrusion into other’s conversations. The cafe is well lit and comfortable with a steady stream of mainstream pop music in the background. There’s plenty of indoor and outdoor seating with a few couches to lounge on.
7/10

Aroma –
Tones of dark chocolate with a pleasant recognisable coffee smell.
8/10

Presentation –
The coffee here is only served in takeaway cups for now. This is because of the newly implemented, strict safety measures to curb the spread of COVID. 20 cents off if you bring your own! Most coffees served in takeaway cups have no latte art and poor presentation. But, this was different. I was thoroughly impressed with the effort and art considering most people don’t remove the lid to appreciate the barista’s hard work.
9/10

Body and Taste –
Medium-bodied with a silky texture. The taste of the coffee was quite mellow, leaning towards the sweeter and creamier side. Very little acidity to it. Nice sweet and milky aftertaste.
7/10

Cost –
$5.60 for a Flat White. One size only. This is one of the cheaper speciality coffee’s available out there.
8/10

The Verdict-
The opportunity to try out so many types of coffee beans without having to invest in an entire bag is exciting. It keeps the coffee fresh and customers on their toes. This also educates the consumer on the various types of coffee beans available and the subtle differences between each that produce such unique flavours. If you are working in NUH or are a student at NUS, this is a cafe worthy of a visit to study, work or get some time off from your busy schedule.
Overall score = 39/50 or 78%
