DC Super Heroes Cafe – A Review of Their Coffee

DC Super Heroes Cafe layout

A superhero-themed restaurant and cafe based on characters from the DC universe. The existence of this cafe was unknown to me until I visited Takashimaya on 28th July 2020 to pick up books for my sister. We came for lunch but the possibility of getting a Batman-style latte art compelled me to order a coffee and so, this review follows. Sadly, they don’t serve Flat Whites and I settled for a Cappucino.

Fun fact; your coffee art is customizable. Choose between any Justice League superhero. Just ask your friendly barista!

Ambience –
Surrounded by DC universe figurines, statues and collectables, there’s plenty to see while waiting for your food and drink to arrive. There are also two massive statues of Batman and Superman with costumes featured in the Batman vs Superman movie. Lots of seating but only four comfortable booths to choose.
8/10

Aroma –
Strong bitter smell with a hint of dark chocolate.
6/10

Cappuccino

Presentation –
All plates, bowls, cups and cutlery are DC themed. Following my request, I was given a lovely Batman symbol on my coffee. There isn’t much more to say but that I was a happy boy that Sunday!
8/10

Body and Taste –
A harsh bitter and acrid taste. My mouth was left very dry after finishing my cup. I would’ve preferred a bit more foam in my coffee, considering it was a Cappuccino I’d ordered. The espresso strongly overpowered the milk.
6/10

Cost –
Espresso based coffees were all priced at a steep $6.90. Even speciality coffee shops and cafes are priced closer to $5.50 so the price is quite expensive.
5/10

The Verdict –
I prefer a smooth coffee taste and something foamier, especially if I’m getting a Cappuccino, but my dad did enjoy the coffee as he’s a big fan of the bitterness. However, the dry aftertaste is a little offputting. I would opt for one of their lovely milkshakes instead, which also come in wonderfully themed glasses and customized art.
Overall score = 33/50 or 66%
